The decision to run across America was made in 2015 after the death of my mother from pulmonary fibrosis. Pulmonary fibrosis occurs when lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred making it difficult for your lungs to work properly. As pulmonary fibrosis worsens, you become progressively more short of breath. Watching my mother die from this very debilitating illness was very hard for my father and our family.
The disease affects 5 million people in the world and a staggering 50% of all sufferers die within 3 years of diagnosis. In the UK alone, there are 5000 new cases of pulmonary fibrosis every year.
A key objective of my run across America is to raise money to support families who are affected by the disease. So many people need practical, emotional and financial support and I desperately want to help with this. My family received so much love and emotional support during the last 2 years of my mum’s life and I want to give back. The run is one way I believe I can do this.
My chosen charity is the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust in the United Kingdom. The aim of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust is to provide personal support to people affected by Pulmonary Fibrosis. The Trust offers practical, emotional and financial support where there is a need. The Trust also raise awareness of the illness and in particular the challenges people face on a daily basis.
Further information about the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust can be found at:
I have set up a donation page for my charity at https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/nicholasashill1
Please note that this donation page is additional to my Homepage donation (which contributes to both my run and the Trust). If you wish to make a donation which will go direct to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust please visit this site.
